Hoe groot is de kans op een Oscar voor The Wild Robot?

Sinds de introductie van de Oscar voor Beste Animatiefilm in 2002 hebben 14 van de 22 winnaars van de Annies’ hoofdfilmprijs – en zeven van de afgelopen twaalf edities – het gouden beeldje gewonnen. Met uitzondering van bijvoorbeeld vorig jaar, toen de Academy Award naar The Boy and the Heron van Hayao Miyazaki ging en naar Spider-Man: Across the Spider-Verse, twee films die de Annies van 2024 toch wel domineerde...

Andere winnaars in de spotlight

Kingdom of the Planet of the Apes, alweer de tiende film in de 57 jaar oude franchise, won de prijs voor Best Character Animation – Live Action. Despicable Me 4 werd de enige andere speelfilm een Annie won, voor Best Storyboarding.

Wander to Wonder won de Short Subject Award. Dit is alweer de 41e Award dit seizoen voor deze korte film, die ook nog in de race is voor een Oscar en BAFTA.

De serie Arcane van Netflix en Riot Games domineerde met Beste Regie voor TV/Media, Storyboarding, FX, Production Design, Editing, Muziek en Character Animation. Deze op videogame gebaseerde serie kreeg voor het eerste seizoen in 2021 al negen Annies en een Animated Series Emmy, dus de teller voor de serie staat inmiddels op 16.

De TV Voice Acting-prijs ging naar Paula Pell voor haar stem van Paula in Dream Productions. De Inside Out-serie won ook nog de award voor Best TV/Media - Limited Series.

Wat zijn de Annie Awards eigenlijk?

De Annie Award is een Amerikaanse filmprijs die jaarlijks aan de beste animatiefilms toegekend wordt. De Annie Award is de belangrijkste prijs in de animatiefilmindustrie en wordt sinds 1972 jaarlijks uitgereikt door The International Animated Film Society (ASIFA-Hollywood).

Juried Awards

De eerste Juried Award van de avond, de June Foray Award, vernoemd naar de oprichter van de Annies, ging naar Women in Animation. De June Foray Award wordt uitgereikt aan mensen die een positieve impuls hebben gegeven aan de animatie-industrie. Alberto Menache ontving de Ub Iwerks* Award voor technische prestaties, en de Special Achievement Award van ASIFA-Hollywood ging naar het boek Directing at Disney: The Original Directors of Walt's Animated Films.

De Winsor McCay Awards - als dank voor de levenslange bijdrage aan animatie - werden uitgereikt aan Aaron Blaise en Normand Roger en de dochter en kleindochter van Eunice Macaulay, die in 2013 op 90-jarige leeftijd stierf.

*Ub Iwerks is de man die vorm, beweging en persoonlijkheid aan Mickey Mouse heeft gegeven. Iwerks was een pionier op het gebied van animatie. Ter ere van hem is de Ub Iwerks Award in het leven geroepen en die wordt jaarlijks uitgereikt aan individuen of bedrijven voor technische vooruitgang die een aanzienlijke impact hebben (gehad) op de animatiekunst of -industrie.
